the internet catching things on and off the field

As a sports fan I am biased in this situation but I do not believe Derrick Rose should be considered at fault here. He is a star basketball player who needed a forum to get to the NBA due to the NBA having an age limit of 19. If the NBA and college basketball do not want star players who are lacking in the student department to do shady things in ordered to get paid big money in the NBA, get rid of the age limit. Yes, everyone SHOULD get an education, but the reality is not everyone does. Oh yes, I brought this up because as of this writing NO disciplinary action has been taken against Reggie Bush or Derrick Rose.

Which is a perfect segue way to King James. After last year’s league MVP failed to help Cleveland win a championship at the end of his tremendous season he seemed to fall from hero to zero somewhat. He even looked like a bitter spoiled brat when he was spotted wearing an LBJ MVP shirt just a few days after Orlando ended his season.

It is amazing how quickly one can go from media darling and being the face of the league to looking like a diva. Personally, Lebron is one of my favorite athletes. That being said, the internet can make even the shortest of clips seem like a huge story.

As I went to find that video of King James, I <a href=stumbled upon the story of now former ESPN analyst Steve Phillips.

Now, unless you are a huge baseball fan you probably do not know who Steve Phillips is. The only thing you need to know that the article failed to mention is that Phillips is married, probably not for much longer now, and he has four children.   At the time that I wrote this blog that Steve Philips article is front page news at TMZ.com. Why? Because people like to read about scandal. technology has evolved, gossip has not. As much as Sports fans love to keep up with statistics and jaw dropping plays, they also love gossip and drama. I am beginning to think that is just human nature.

There are countless examples of sports related issues that have been furthered or blown up on the internet, and providing more examples just for the sake of having them seems redundant. So, As the final piece of this post, I would like to discuss antics that take place on the field that are now being frowned upon. Are we sucking the entertainment value out of the games? I’m all for good sportsmanship and I believe it should be a prominent part of every game. However, one of the most memorable moments in Georgia Football History lacked any kind of sportsmanship.

Sportsmanship is important, but at the end of the day it is just a game and athletes need to remember to have fun. In a lot of ways it is unfair that athletes and celebrities are put on such a moral pedestal, but that is the price of fame these days. One should just try to use good judgment, and display good morals and common sense.

After all the videos that shed a potentially negative light, here is a quick reminder of why sports is such great theater.
