As the internet continues to evolve in its use, it will be up to parents to make sure that their kids have positive role models, I used to enjoy Tiger Woods and he is still a great golfer. His actions towards his wife and family are inexcusable and his reputation will continue to suffer a great deal.
So goes the dichotomy of the internet as it relates to the wide world of sports. If one can keep their personal life private, the new technology can be very helpful. It can help a fading athlete keep his name relevant if he posts a witty or controversial tweet. However, a screw up will get you hammered by the internet. That is why I brought Tiger Woods into the example. The internet has been all over this story.
In closing out this blog for this project, Today’s culture is nothing short of obsessed with celebrities. That is why their are celebrity gossip shows all over networks in the 7:30 timeslot. TMZ, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood. The fixation on celebrities did not begin with the internet. However, the instant information available on the internet has perpetuated that. Somewhere along the way Athletes have started being grouped in with celebrities. In my opinion part of that stems from leagues marketing their athletes as superstars in ordered to make more money, as well as 24 hour news channels such as ESPN.
Fame comes with a price. Athletes need to realize that the same way that celebrities do. If one is on television they need to realize that people will want to meet them regardless of what they do off the field. The media and resources like the internet can help build one up. Although, that person should not be expect to caught by the media if they fall. The story is probably way too juicy and there are a lot of unique page hits to be had.
